Paramjit Kaur Khalra to contest against Jagir Kaur from Khadur Sahib
For 20 years, Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra fought a long and lonely battle to ensure justice for her husband, who “disappeared” one day while searching for Sikh youths who had gone missing during the militancy period in Punjab.
Now, Bibi Khalra is giving a new turn to her life as she contests the Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib as Punjabi Ekta Party candidate. “From this platform, we hope to tell the world why people like Jaswant Singh Khalra are important for democracy and peace in society,” she says.
It is not for the first time when Bibi Khalra is contesting an election. Earlier, she was a candidate of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal floated by Gurcharan Singh Tohra after parting ways with Parkash Singh Badal. She had unsuccessfully contested from the erstwhile Tarn Taran parliamentary constituency.
Paramjit Kaur said, “My agenda will be promoting human rights. If I win the election, I will protect the human rights of not only the people living in my constituency but of the whole country. My husband had given his life for protecting human rights and I will follow the path shown by him.” Supporting Paramjit Kaur Khalra, Sukhpal Singh Khaira told media that after the death of her husband, Paramjit Kaur formed a human rights organisation. “She fought legal battles to deliver justice to those families, which have lost their sons in fake encounters during militancy period. She continues to fight for the human rights and we consider her as the strongest candidate against SAD’s Bibi Jagir Kaur.
KHADOOR SAHIB IS A PANTHIC SEAT AND PARAMJIT KAUR IS A REAL PANTHIC FACE,” KHAIRA SAID. Launching an attack on Bibi Jagir Kaur, who was announced as the SAD candidate on Tuesday, Khaira said, Jagir Kaur has no base in Khadoor Sahib. She will suffer a severe defeat from the constituency.
Former Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief and ex-MLA Bibi Jagir Kaur was Tuesday named the Shiromani Akali Dal candidate for the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab – the first nominee announced by the party for the Lok Sabha polls. “The first ticket of the SAD for the parliamentary elections from the Khadoor Sahib seat is given to Bibi Jagir Kaur,” party president Sukhbir Badal said, addressing the gathering in Tarn Taran.
